Dalmatian Hinterland Heritage Experience

Most visitors to Dalmatia never turn inland. This full private day does — to Sinj and its Alka tradition, the Roman legionary fortress at Tilurium, and the fortress of Klis holding the mountain pass that controlled the coast for two thousand years. It is the Dalmatia that defended and fed the coastal cities, and it explains them.

The journey

  1. Morning

    Sinj

The inland town of Sinj, its sanctuary and the tradition of the Alka — a knightly tournament held every August since 1715 to mark the defeat of a far larger Ottoman force, and now protected by UNESCO.

  2. Midday

    Tilurium

The Roman legionary fortress at Tilurium above the Cetina, one of the principal military positions of the province, followed by a curated Dalmatian lunch.

  3. Afternoon

    Klis & Salona

The fortress of Klis, holding the pass between the mountains and the sea, and then down to Salona — the Roman capital whose fall sent its citizens into Diocletian’s palace and created Split.
